Sometimes it is useful to step back to get the big picture on a subject. Peg O'Connor has done that in a thoughtful opinion piece in Sunday's New York Times. Titled "In the Cave: Philosophy and Addiction", O'Connor (a modern philosopher) invokes the thinking of Plato, Socrates and Locke to cast an intelligent and comprehensive light on the subject of addiction. For me, my day-to-day work with substance issues took on a new dimension when viewed against my (decades old) recollections from an introduction to philosophy class.
