SAMHSA, the federal government's drug abuse agency, says in a release that averages show over a 15 year gap between when a person begins the use of a substance and when he is first admitted for treatment. The report was based on information from 669,000 persons who were admitted for the first time for substance abuse treatment during 2010 (a disturbing number in itself). The average for all responses was 15.6 years. Broken down, the survey showed the substance with the longest delay was alcohol at 20.2 years while pain killers had the shortest gap at 7.8 years. Men took longer than women with 16.5 to 13.8.
