Doctors urged: Get training to fight drug abuse & addiction

Years ago, my classmates and I were presented a program by a recovered marijuana user who presented his story with the question: "What kind of people use drugs?" I have come to realize that from the answer, "Sick people," just how far-sighted this young man was.
As more and more, who study the subject, recognize addiction to be a disease, it is surprising that many in the medical professions may be as unaware of this as those in the general population! A piece posted recently at Psych Central explores "Why do doctors prescribe addictive drugs to known addicts?" It points out that (contrary to what we'd expect) that many physicians aren't trained to recognize substance and may not recognize the potentials for addiciton, fail to notice drug-seeking behavior, and generally not understand addiction.
Professional organizations are beginning efforts to require health care providers to have specific training on prescribing addictive drugs,recognizing the signs of addiction and other problems with the use and misuse of these medications. To read the full article <click here>
