New approach to reducing alcohol use

From London comes word about a medication that reduces the desire for drinking. Called Nalmefene, the pill which is going through trials, is supposed to reduce the urge for alcohol. Information about the treatment says the medicine is intended to be used in combination with counseling programs. Existing medicines used to treat alcohol abuse cause reactions to drinking while Nalmefene is said to reduce the urge as well help reduce the degree of use amongst binge drinkers. The new medication is still in clinical trials and probably will still have to go through various approval procedures in that country. No word on whether there is, at present, any work to bring it into the markets of any other countries.
