From time to time, it's good to step back and take a look at the big picture. As addictionbattles is approaching its first anniversary, we're taking stock of what we've seen and written. It is becoming apparent that substance abuse and addiction are complicated issues and that there is a network of factors that need to be addressed.
For one, we need to consider some cause and effect combinations. There are complex inter-relationships between substance dependence, abuse and addiction. It would be helpful to understand and locate these at the beginning of the individual's problem sequence rather than at the end.
This fits with ideas that prevention measures are more desirable and beneficial than cures.
Human personality is complicated and the mix involves dealing with negative reactions to stress, addressing various other life, work and relationship problems as well as the related and resulting troubles with substances and behavior.
In other words, we're describing a mental health condition that requires a comprehensive, holistic response.
